Tips on Communicating with your Child
  1. Listen with care
  2. Be clear and consistent in what you say
  3. Use eye contact to show interest
  4. Use “I” messages instead of “you” ones
  5. See that you have the child’s attention before speaking
  6. Be clear in your own mind as to what you want from them
  7. Use “what if” (open-ended questions) rather than those which can be answered “yes” or “no”
  8. Communicate acceptance of the child
  9. Use “door-openers” – invitations to say more – to expand child’s skill at communicating
  10. Use positive rather than negative language
