Tips on Communicating with your Child
- Listen with care
- Be clear and consistent in what you say
- Use eye contact to show interest
- Use I messages instead of you ones
- See that you have the child’s attention before speaking
- Be clear in your own mind as to what you want from them
- Use what if (open-ended questions) rather than those which can be answered yes or no
- Communicate acceptance of the child
- Use door-openers invitations to say more to expand child’s skill at communicating
- Use positive rather than negative language
