Tips on Communicating with your Child
- Listen with care
- Be clear and consistent in what you say
- Use eye contact to show interest
- Use “I” messages instead of “you” ones
- See that you have the child’s attention before speaking
- Be clear in your own mind as to what you want from them
- Use “what if” (open-ended questions) rather than those which can be answered “yes” or “no”
- Communicate acceptance of the child
- Use “door-openers” – invitations to say more – to expand child’s skill at communicating
- Use positive rather than negative language
