Tips on Sibling Relationships
- Help children become aware of each other’s feelings
- Emphasize and model verbal communication
- Reward positive interactions with words
- Recognize that the family is the learning place for negotiating with others
- Do not compare children to each other
- Build self esteem by giving positive attention and teaching new skills
- Ignore small conflicts
- Encourage problem-solving on their own
- Have consistent family rules that apply to all members (including adults)
- When two children want the same cupcake, have one divide it, and let the other one choose first!
